Cuteness is a ideal. A way of life. A mood. A flavor. But sometimes I have to remind myself that it’s also just a word, that there are things beyond THINGS. Every summer my family makes a trip up the coast to Big Sur, and this year our precious redwoods and cypresses were seriously in danger of going up in smoke, and that was very, very scary. We couldn’t go camping in Big Sur, but we did manage to try out a new campground in Sequoia National Park- it was a blessing in disguise. I’m incredibly thankful that Big Sur is still there, and I am also really grateful that we got sent on this wonderful adventure in a totally new place! There were new trees, new smells, new climate, and new bears! To the best of my knowledge Big Sur doesn’t have bears. We got lucky and didn’t have any run-ins, but we did find bear poop! Of course my batteries died before I could capture the majesty of bear poop . . . so here are some flowers!

Look at that- aren’t they romantic? It had just rained when we got there, and everything was fresh and aromatic and wet.
It was really unbelievable that nature could be so perfect, and so CUTE. Like Disneyland cute. Everything looked landscaped, but it was just incredibly pristine. We were miles and miles and miles from any kind of store or village or anything and that was a very neat experience.
I think I’m digressing, but what I basically wanted to say was that cuteness for cuteness’ sake is nice and fun, but it’s nice to remember that cuteness comes from somewhere- beautiful and romantic things, fantastic color combinations exist outside of people, and that makes me really, really happy.
