Today was day two of job-free living. I have to say aside from the clouds it’s been pretty damn good. Last night I attended a scrumptious writing workshop! Yumilicious! There were two kitties there! It felt really good to focus some energy on fiction again. It felt good to be around writers. Really f-ing good. It’s been in the back of my mind to get craft-tastic with my writing and I’ve really failed in that department. When I say craft-tastic, what I mean is that I want to turn my writing into little books that are lovely to look at and to smell and to read. My passion is re-kindled! I will definitely be not only working on something decently written, but something gorgeous to hold in your hands. I’m gonna make a big promise here, but I need the pressure- I hereby promise the world a box set of Polly Danger books by the end of this year, beginning with “A Day at the Zoo”.
A pretty fantastic start to my job-free life! That was only day 1! Day 2 got off to kind of a slow start because my sister came to visit and I ended up reading her US Weekly from cover to cover. I did manage to work on my secret second shop (I’ll reveal that mystery soon), take more photos (damn those clouds!) cut some flowers, sell some goodies, play with Blythe, and experiment with my new XYRON! Did I mention that I scored a Xyron 510, including three different cartridges, for $7?! In perfect working condition, I might add. Thank you Valley Thrift, for the bountiful bounty which you bestow upon me every time I visit. Anyway, here’s a little tease-

Just something I’m working on at the moment. I might post it in my etsy shop tomorrow, maybe.

Not that I have any clear purpose for this yet, but I absolutely could not stop myself from buying it.

Ridiculously sparkly and soft. I want to eat it.
Today is my first day of no work. It’s strange, and sooooo lovely. I just don’t know where to start! How about by adding a new item in my etsy shop? Okay, sounds good! Here it is. A bag of yummy, pretty scraps of fabric and trim. Some new, some vintage, all gorgeous and much loved by me. It’s time to start getting ready to move my studio and that means going through my fabric and passing it on to other crafters who will love it as much as I do!

Also I got a lovely, lovely mention at Gumball Grenade from Tanya, creator of the lovely, lovely Foxes and Fables goodies that I love so much. Thanks Tanya!

Just got back from a walk to the post office with Eric and the doggies. Such a huge difference in weather from yesterday! The sun is sort of shining, and there’s a gentle, warmish breeze blowing. And! FLOWERS are blooming!!!!! This definitely has to be my favorite part of an L.A. “winter”. Rain just means flowers and grass to me. When we got back from our walk I felt determined to document our own baby buds and sniff out the delicious scent that I’ve been walking through every day for the past week. The root of the delicious aroma? Orange blossoms above the carport. I looked up and there are thousands of little white buds ready to burst open like popcorn. The sight of it made me swoon.

Sometimes I really, really love living here.

Okay, here’s the cheerful post to follow the downer I just wrote.
On the upside of me leaving the urban craft center, I get to watch flowers bloom this spring, I get to take photos in actual daylight again, I get to walk my dogs every morning, I get to have a GIANT craft studio at home and craft almost full time! This means boatloads more cuteness, boatloads more utility, boatloads more craft shows, more writing, and more joint projects with Lil Redheaded Boy, which I’ve always dreamed of. We’ve actually been secretly planning a really, big deal. I can’t quite talk about it, but have any of you ever wondered what would happen if Polly Danger and LRhB crafted things together? F-ing ridiculously gorgeous crap would emerge. Forget babies (for the moment), we’re making crafties!

After six craft-ful and exciting months at the UCC it’s finally time to say goodbye. I’ve had an incredible lot of fun making stuff and getting to be around some really wonderful, creative ladies. Now, however, it’s time for me to be home. Time for me to focus my energy on Polly Danger. A change at home has made it possible for Eric and me to turn our living studio into a crafting studio, which is really, really fantastic. I’m going to get to spend more time with Grandma, more time with my doggy-cakes, but mostly, more time making adorable stuff!
The Urban Craft Center will never leave me entirely. I have loads and loads of really, really hilarious memories and I will still be spending some of my free time there. I may even teach classes there still. We’ll see. I’m going to miss my really awesome customers, and miss people coming in to share their crafts. I’m mostly going to miss crafting with Rhea and Karen. Sigh.
I think I’ll have to follow this post up with a really cheerful one, because this is just a downer!

Happy Tuesday!
About five years ago my lovely Eric found this book and brought it home to me. a simple, pink book, with the words almost completely faded from the binding.
It’s taken me this long, but I think I’m finally ready to share its contents with the world. It has helped me come to the conclusion that girls named “polly” have a much higher probability of being crafty and awesome.

It’s one of the coolest books I own, chock full of genuinely helpful tips, in addition to some quaint ideas about women’s responsibilities in the home. I thought I’d start sharing some of my favorite bits with you on a regular basis. Today’s Tuesday? Maybe Tuesdays will be my Polly’s Pointers days. Here’s the first one. Most of these are actually written by homemakers who have written in to Polly’s column.
“When I sew I never keep a wastebasket near me as there are always children playing on the floor. Now I take a six-inch piece of masking tape and lay it, sticky side up, on the right side of my sewing machine. Cut-off threads are put on the sticky tape. It never seems to get pushed off or blown on the floor. After the sewing is finished, I throw both the thread and tape away.”

Ever since I read that tip that’s how I deal with my cut threads. Some tips just don’t age!
