My Score at the Library and Other Nonsense
I mentioned it earlier, but oh sweetness what a fabulous find at the library on Monday! Sewing Made Easy, published 1952. So sweet. I went to pick up a book on hold and there it was right in that delicious pile of free books by the entrance. I also found a gift waiting to happen- a young adult novel of the same era called “Hot Rod”, which I also brought home.
But back to the sewing book. Aside from the obvious fantastic drawings and lettering, what really impresses me about this book is that there are several chapters dedicated to mending and cutting down clothing to make something new! I can’t wait to try some of the projects listed. Like making my own slippers out of an old house coat (I stopped wearing house coats as outer wear when I was in high school but I’m sure I have something that fits the bill)!
I also appreciate the very clear instructions on simple mending. After reading this section I realized I’ve been darning wrong my entire life. What sewing book now shows you that kind of stuff?! So neat.
Here’s the page which shows the correct way to darn- oh and the author also suggests placing a jar lid under the hole to help you work!
I just can’t get over what a wonderful gem this is and how lucky I was to have found it in the free pile!
I’ll keep you updated on the sewing projects as I start them so that you can follow along!
Okay, now for the nonsense. I just wanted to share that today I started the process of digitally cataloging my fabric collection and it is SO exhausting! have to photograph, measure, and tag each piece of fabric I own before importing the pictures for my back-end organization. Ugh. I only made it through the bias-tape-appropriate florals today. There’s still bias tape gingham, bias tape polka dots, and bias tape “other” to get through before I move on to larger prints. The good news is that once all this labor is over with I can offer an incredibly scrumptious new set of bias tapes for your sewing enjoyment!
And so ends the nonsense. And I go mimis!
